We had to take little Peter for his regular cardiology appointment this morning. I can't remember if I've mentioned before, but he was born with heart defects - a hole in the heart (VSD), a narrowing in the artery leaving his heart (coarctation of the aorta) and a faulty (bicuspal) valve. He needed surgery at eight weeks old to repair the narrowing in the artery because it was slowing the blood leaving his heart which then caused back pressure, which then forced blood into the wrong chamber through the hole...you get the idea, and then he was operated on again at nine months because the artery had narrowed slightly again so they had to balloon it. He now has a massive scar like a sharkbite round his side and up his back. The hole in his heart has more or less closed now, but they like to keep an eye on him to make sure everything is working as it should because the valve or the artery could need looking at again. I'm pleased to report that everything is fine. We know he may need further surgery on the valve etc but that won't be until he is much older, if at all. I wasn't expecting them to find anything to worry about because Peter is very well in himself, but it's nice to have it confirmed that there's no problem at the moment!
